The prophet Yirmiyahu foretold both the destruction of the Temple and the redemption, an apparent contradiction. Another seeming contradiction is that his prophecy of impending doom came at a time that Jewish observance was at its height. But these contradictions carry within them the subtle theme of Yirmiyahu: what God wants most from the Jews is not external practice but our faithful hearts.
